Hello Hans,

I have recently managed to obtain for my display a "Formular Nr. 111" card/envelope used to send DKr 65,000 from Kjobenhavn to Aalborg in 1917. The weight of the one package is stated as 1 Kilo 500 gms and postage applied in stamps amounts to 305 ore. There is no information to suggest how charges have been calculated. The only addition to the stamps is a purple label 605 Kjobenhavn in the lop left corner. I presume the card/cover is what you would call a "Pengebrev".

I have an earlier similar card/envelope for transfer of DKr 28,500 from Viborg to Horsens on 11 June 1902 where the weight of the one package is 1.05 Kilo. The total postage shown is 658 ore made up, I understand, as:-

Packet weight  16ore

Declared Value Insurance 480 ore

Counting Fee  150 ore

Cash on Delivery 12 ore

From the books and information I have on Denmark postal rates (AFA catalogues and Danske Breve 1851-1971) I cannot establish how the postage rate on my new acquisition is arrived at. Would you, or one of your philatelic colleagues, be kind enough to advise me how the rate of 305 ore has been calculated.

The stamps are from Print 12 or 13. The large block of 8 I s positions 1-2, 11-12, 21-22, 31-32. The vertical pair to the left of the sideways block of 12 are positions 19 and 29. I have not been able to identify the positions for the vertical pair at bottom right but that does not matter. The 5 ore Ch is a perfin "LB" - Den Danske Landmandsbank.

Attached is a scan of the cover in question. I look forward to receiving advice on how the rate is arrived at.

Kind regards

Hello David

The illustrated item is a parcel letter for an insured parcel. The rate is as follows:

Weight postage: 20 øre for 0-2,5 kg.

Insurance fee: 15 øre for the first 1000 kr + 5 øre per 1000 kr beyond the first 1000 kr = 15 + 64x5 = 335 øre

Total postage: 355 øre 01/Jul/1908-31/Oct/1917.

Thus, there is 50 øre missing, or are they on the backside of the parcel letter?

Med venlig hilsen

Henrik

Hello Henrik,

Many thanks for your reply about the postage rate.

There are not a two 25 ore stamps attached to the reverse of the envelope - copy attached. I have examined the front and reverse very closely to see if there is a trace of stamps having been removed, as far as I can see, under a magnifying glass and also hold it angles to the light the surface of the cover has not been damaged by removal of stamps. The cover still has the original sheen both back and front. While the bank stamp, in violet, is not as heavily stamped in the middle it is in no way damaged and the paper sheen is still there. Additionally any two stamps on the reverse would have been cancelled and if the stamps were removed there should probably still be a trace of part of a postmark - none that I can see.

I have come to the conclusion that the under payment by 50 ore is:-

A - a mistake on the counter clerk’s part in calculating the rate.

OR

B- a mistake by the counter clerk in adding up the value of the stamps applied to the cover.

I presume underpayment may not have been noticed thereafter as the insured parcel has had the stamps applied at a Post Office.

Kind regards

David

Hello David,

I agree with the two possibilities.
